  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from GoingInside -- Personal Recollections of "The Paladin" : The Joan of Arc story is a fascinating read, filled with historical facts and characters, showcasing a young peasant girl's rise from anonymity to Saint. When Twain focuses on her story, this is a fine book. Unfortunately, Twain makes endless digressions into the "comical" character of "The Paladin", a fictional childhood friend of Joan who - at times - seems to entirely take over the novel. These Twainian detours are distracting and not particularly funny, but they form the balance of the latter section of Volume I. ( Reviewed in the United States on March 28, 2018 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Joyce Metzger -- Excellent : Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc, Volume 1, by Mark Twain is a delightful story written by an author who needs little introduction. Lightness combines ( Reviewed in the United States on January 14, 2013 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from magic -- Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc - Volume 1 : Mark Twain has out done himself in this work. The true story of Joan of Arc is told from the point of view of a close friend. You are with her throughout her whole life, from her humble beginnings, her miraculous entry into French politics and rise to leadership of the army to her capture, trial and martyrdom. It is amazing how much she was able to achieve in such a short time. How she was abandoned and betrayed by the King she saved and raised to the throne is very poignantly presented to the reader. Well worth reading. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 8, 2012 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Elaine H. -- Personal Reflections of Joan of Arc : I've always loved reading about Joan of Arc. I found Mark Twain's book late but I'm so glad I finally came across it. I loved learning the characters and their personalities and flaws. The book starts out so lovely but it's a little sad to read because if you know the history of Joan of Arc then you know how the story ends. Still so beautiful to read about her and her life through the writing of Mark Twain. I highly recommend this book. ( Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2017 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Ruben Chandler -- One of my favorite books in the world : Having this book without a functioning table of contents is a crime. Then I could overlook the sometimes horrendous typos and missing sections of text. Let the buyer beware but at this price, for Camus, it's still a steal. • from Steve S. -- VINE VOICE : Brilliant Mark Twain ( 5.0 out of 5 stars )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Natalie, BSPW -- A lesson in courtesy and heroism for girls : To read of a modest, illiterate, country girl and her spiritual journey to the head of France's beleaguered military in the midst of 100 Years' War was a long, deep drink at a well with sweet, clear water. In the midst of many victories, Joan of Arc remained modest and grounded, with deprecating humor toward herself and great courtesy towards others. She is still an inspiration! • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Cheryl -- One of his best works. : I got this Kindle version to take the place of a hardback that I gave away, ans still hope to replace. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 15, 2020 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Dommy -- Wonderful : By far one of Mark Twain's greatest works. Eloquently written, interesting, passionate and compelling throughout, this is a fantastic book that I would like to recommend to anyone enjoying a bit of good literature. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from PaulC -- Fantastic read! : Joan of arc described in the eyes of those closest to her, makes her even more heroic and divinely driven. It would be hard not to enjoy the wit and elaborate descriptions made in this lovely book. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 27, 2013 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Dave M -- Four Stars : Good ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 25, 2015 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Krystal Lyn -- Get to know who Joan of Arc was as a real life person : Joan's friend is the voice behind the story, he is telling what he remember of Joan of Arc and her personality. You get to know her a little better and more intimately than the other stories out there. I really enjoyed getting to know who Joan of Arc was as far as her personality goes from someone who was close to her. It makes her seem more human and real rather than just a story or a character than doesn't seem real. ( Reviewed in Canada on February 27, 2017 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Mary Ator -- Powerful Recollections. : I got totally drawn into this book, I enjoyed every chapter. Makes one think about the power of ONE. ( Reviewed in Canada on April 14, 2019 )
